“The Blessed Giles Before Pope Gregory IX” by Bartolomé
This first painting is from the earlier Baroque period of art. Paintings of holy figures were important in those times and the subject of many pieces of art. This painting in particular shows Giles levitating in front of the pope which is pretty much a superhuman feat. Religious symbolism and miracles were really important to these people thus having a huge impact on a majority of art at the time. Though Volaire’s painting is not solely of a religious scene it does contain a great deal of religious symbolism in portions in order to create his larger picture.

“The Deposition” by Fra Bartolommeo
Another work of Baroque depicting the lament over the death of Jesus. While similar to the previous piece of art this one also shows the quality of human emotions as the people around jesus show great grief over his death. These kind of religious paintings and paintings with more human emotions defined this period of art. Volaire’s painting also has a great deal of human emotion similar to this as people mourn over the loss of their homes and pray to saints for salvation.

“The Forest Chapel” by Thomas Kinkade
This is an example of a modern scenic painting which has a heavy use of lighting effects. It was painted by the well known artist Thomas Kinkade who is also known as the “master of light”. This painting shows that techniques such as the ones that Volaire used to create his outstanding light and shading effects are still in use by some artists today. Volaire’s scenic painting of mount vesuvius is really similar to this painting in terms of the scenery but the Kinkade’s painting lacks anything but the scene.

“The American Way” by Norman Rockwell
Another modern painting but this time one that shows the more humanistic ideals. In this painting a soldier can be seen feeding a little girl, likely left helpless during a war (World War 2). It is a show of the capable helping the needy which is also shown to a great extent in Volaire’s painting. Volaire has scenes of men helping elderly women and husbands rushing thier families on to safety which gives many of the same humanistic feelings as does Rockwell’s. Humanism as a movement started a little before Volaire’s time so its no surprise to see it hinted at in his painting but Rockwell;’s painting demonstrates how the ideals have carried over to modern times.

“A nocturnal Mediterranean Coastal Scene” by Pierre-Jacques Volaire
This is another piece painted by volaire depicting a coastal scene with mount vesuvius in the background. In this painting Volaire demonstrates again his skills at lighting and depicting people going about their business. These were the kind of painting volaire became famous on and what he is remembered for which was scenic paintings usually along the coast with great lighting. This is one of the other depictions of Mount Vesuvius mentioned earlier.
