Original Piece by Winslow Homer "Weaning the Calf" painting 1875
This painting is drawn by Winslow Homer as well. It portrays a white male giving contraband to an African American child. During the war, the slaves found were often returned to their masters or kept as “contraband of war”. I believe that Winslow is painting the irony of a union fighter giving contraband to the slave. This correlates with the Reconstruction Era, and how things are changing after the civil war. This picture relates to the original Weaning of the Calf because it shows that
things are changing (possibly at different paces).
Though this picture was painting in the 1900s, the concept behind it sheds alike. This painting is referring to the incident at little rock that dealt with Black segregation in schools. The significance of this painting is that it deals with strong racial inequality, rather than in the likes of just two white boys (Weaning of the Calf), but by other students.
This picture correlates to the social aspects during the 19th century. Moreover, this picture was painted by a Reconstruction Era painter that focused on how African Americans were compared to Americans during this time period. I think this relates to my original picture because it confronts how the society pictures Africans during this time period.

This is a much more complex picture when looking at Civil War paintings. This painting shows the lives of African Americans during the post war period. This is a remarkable genre painting because it is a snapshot of the everyday life of African Americans. You can see that the house is tattered along with their clothing, but they tend to still be happy with their lives.

This picture shows the agony and struggle of living in the 1800s. This picture shows African Americans and their job in society. This pictures can correlate to pre and post war genre because the society never really changed after. This picture also shows the emotions behind living in slavery as did Weaning of the Calf.
